From the 1st October – 27th November, thirteen countries and over 40 artists converge on Greater Manchester for the second Asia Triennial. As one of the biggest festivals in Europe the Triennial brings together many genres from film and new media, through to sculptural installations and performance art. Exploring the theme of Time and Generation, the Triennial delivers thought provoking experiences of Asian arts through a range of both site specific and gallery exhibited work.
The Triennial brings an unforgettable experience of Asian art, and this year it has spread even further afield with specifically commissioned pieces such as Silsila, Installed at Manchester University’s Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, Drained by Adeela Suleman at Manchester Cathedral, and 5 Places at Bury Art Museum. One of the most iconic shows of the Triennial has to be the first UK major exhibition by Rashid Rana at Cornerhouse. It features the artist’s work from 1992 through to present day and brings together a collection of photo sculptures, large-scale photo mosaics, installations and new video, all created to challenge the viewers perceptions of size and structure.
To accompany the triennial there is also a series of introductory talks. Peoples History Museum presents Shifting Identity (13th November) and the for the fun loving try the Alternative Gallery Tour: With Mrs Barbara Nice (26th November) at Cornerhouse, all currated to help explore the featured works and their complexities.
The Asia Triennial Manchester serves as a platform towards a greater understanding of Asian work throughout the UK and Europe and also helps to strengthen its value and place within Asia itself, helping the growing network of emerging talent from this historical and colourful part of the world.
