Autumn in Theatre

Theatre.
Autumn is upon us and with it comes a brand new season of theatre.
Old meets new at the Royal Exchange and Contact with Edward II and Romeo and Juliet. Enjoy the drama and passion of these Elizabethan plays, all wrapped up in a more modern package. Each play has been reworked and presented in its very own unique contempory style from dialogue, stage set to costume.
Laugh away those impending winter blues with a lineup of fantastic comedy shows. The Lowry has a brilliant program of standup featuring sets from Shappi Khorsandi and Hal Cruttenden. If the weather starts to make you feel a little grey bring back that feel good vibe with those good old sing along favorites, Annie, Grease, South Pacific and Dirty Dancing, all coming soon to the Palace Theatre. Autumn 2011 also sees some feel good film classics go from screen to stage. Catch Sister Act and Legally Blonde at the Opera House and head to the Octagon Theatre, Bolton to see Alfie, the man about town with the world at his feet and a new bird every Saturday night.
If you are looking for something more befitting those dark stormy evenings why not try something more sinister…
Experience chills with Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at Capitol Theatre. This well known story of murderous revenge will be sure to get you on the edge of your seat. Get caught up with Deathtrap, a classic murder mystery play of jealousy and betrayal, and Equus, a unique psychological thriller exploring the complex relationships between worship, myth and sexuality, both showing at the Oldham Coliseum. They are all guaranteed to get you in the mood to start shouting “He’s behind you!”
Looking for something to compliment your theatre choices? Pop down to Manchester Art Gallery and view a snapshot of Victorian Britain by the great Ford Madox Brown. For something more 21st Century, explore the impact of scientific, digital and mechanical invention upon visual culture with the Dark Matters exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery. Finally, what better way to celebrate autumn than with the complimentary oranges reds and golds of the Egyptians in Unearthed at Manchester Museum.
With an amazing line up this autumn, roll on winter is all I say!
