Salford's Hidden Gem

The Working Class Movement Library is Salford’s hidden gem, and a haven for all history students or self confessed buffs if gone previously overlooked.

An archive of working class history from the past 200 years, the Working Class Movement Library is quite fittingly built on the blocks of its own history, all stemming from the shared enthusiasm of its founders Eddie and Ruth Frow. What started as a mutual passion for all things labour history, their personal collection began to overflow their own house in Stretford, Manchester until bursting at the seams, which saw the collection’s relocation to Salford in 1987 where it continues today as a fine emulation of the original library and a true testament to the pair. The Frow’s dedication still remains very much at the heart of this project in Salford.

The collection offers insight into the intricate workings of trade unions, campaigns and inspiring activists along with so much more. The library has built upon what was once the Frow’s personal collection since the relocation, and now houses a massive accumulation of books, pamphlets, posters, banners, newspapers, prints, photographs and more over three floors, rendering it a wonderland for those with an interest in the working class movement. The ground floor reading room and working space is free to use, and can be used by anyone by appointment.

The library is managed by a strong staff of resident librarians and dedicated volunteers, and there is always someone on hand to offer their assistance; all with their own individual interests and expertise to answer most queries, and some who knew Eddie and Ruth personally.

Opening hours and directions can be found on the library’s website, along with contact details to arrange a visit as free access to the library is by appointment only.  It is encouraged that visitors browse through the online catalogue beforehand to locate their desired material as the building hosts such a vast array of items.
