Greater Manchester
The urban district of the City of Manchester is surrounded by the nine outlying districts of Greater Manchester, where many of the 2.5 million Mancunians live. These districts are Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan.
The cities and towns within greater Manchester are home to many excellent cultural institutions, arts venues, beautiful parks and attractions, and should not be overlooked by visitors to the city who have the time and the inclination to explore.
Places like Heaton Park, Manchester Jewish Museum, Bolton Museum and Art Gallery, Stockport Hat Museum, The Met in Bury and Oldham Coliseum are only a short distance from the city centre, and are well worth a visit.
Transport links between the city centre and the rest of Greater Manchester are very good. Estimated travel times to/from the city centre are:
- Bolton - 20 minutes by train, one hour by bus
- Bury – 25 minutes by tram, 40 minutes by bus
- Oldham – 20 minutes by train, 40 minutes by bus
- Rochdale – 20 minutes by train or bus
- Salford – 10 minutes by train, 15 minutes by tram or 10 minutes by bus
- Stockport – 15 minutes by train, 30 minutes by bus
- Tameside – 15 minutes by train, 30 minutes by bus
- Trafford – 15 minutes by tram, 30 minutes by bus
- Wigan – 30 minutes by train, 50 minutes by bus
