Berio knew, when he arranged his folk songs, that classical and folk music can work amazingly well together. For one evening at Band on the Wall, there was a chance to see this partnership in action. Manchester Camerata and Derbyshire born-and-bred Bella Hardy came together for a night of folk music, classical music, and music infused with both at the same time. The arrangements of traditional folk songs by young composers were excellent: creative and varied. Rebecca Lea and Manchester Camerata's interpretation of Berio's aforementioned folk songs was beautiful. Add a couple of folk sets from Bella Hardy and band, and you make for a fantastically varied and entertaining night.

an inspired collaboration! What a lovely way to spend an evening! Bella Hardy was charming, her voice was stunning and her songs were both moving and amusing. The collaboration with Manchester Camerata was inspired. You could tell Bella was out of her comfort zone, but it made a refreshing to change to see an artist, comfortable in their own genre, stretch and challenge them self, and bravely cross boundaries. The arrangements, by Manchester Camerata’s young composers were original and captivating. I loved Tom Coult’s version of The Snows They Melt the Soonest - I couldn’t stop my toes from tapping! With a more classical singing style, the Luciano Berio folk songs weren’t really my cup of tea. Having said that, the percussionists kept me captivated - creating such beautiful sounds from inanimate metal tubes and saucepans...what’s not to love?! It was great to see the classical contingent and folkies, both old and new (or should that be ‘nu’?), come together as one audience. There was a lovely buzz in the air, and I think Manchester Camerata, Band on the Wall and Bella Hardy all deserve a big bravo.
