Venue Information
Operating as a heritage visitor attraction and arts venue, the grade II* listed Victoria Baths is widely recognised as the nation’s finest historic swimming pool and Turkish baths complex. An architectural gem, rich in stained glass, mosaic floors and decorative tiling, it has rightly been described as a “water palace”. Victoria Baths was closed as a public baths in 1993 and is partially restored since winning a £3m prize on BBC’s Restoration.
Throughout 2011 Victoria Baths has a display of 20 historic swimsuits from the Mavis Plume collection which was donated to Southend Museum.
Popular guided tours every Wednesday afternoon relate the history of the building and its ongoing restoration. Displays and archive film footage illustrate the fascinating story of Manchester’s swimming history. Monthly Open Days include additional attractions such as vintage fairs, musical performances or art exhibitions. Victoria Baths is also open for group visits and educational activities.
Victoria Baths has a small café and a souvenir shop. The café serves hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and snacks. Hot meals are available on Open Days.
